every zombie apocolypse has a cast. here's a handy-dandy reference of the histories of the current characters before shit went down and what they're like after, as well as the skills they bring to the zombie-killin' group.

please don't reply to top-level info comments in case someone wants to add something in to their comment. spamming the post itself is fine by me.

i made a text area. i'll make this write-up pretty later.

name. Jean Kirschtein
age. 24

before the infection. Born and raised in Evanston, Illinois (the affluent, wealthy first suburb to the north of Chicago proper), Jean attended Northwestern University and got a degree in business and was working on his MBA. He came from a very driven, materialistic family with a huge focus on success, and he was an intense "eyes on the prize" kind of guy. He'd scored a sweet internship with a Fortune 500 company down in the Loop (the very middle of Chicago), and was busy glad-handing, networking, and anticipating his graduation in a few weeks when the outbreak happened. He just happened to be standing in line at a Starbucks when the shit when down in Chi-town, and had to fight his way out of the city.

after the infection. Getting out of a densely populated urban area was an absolute nightmare, one Jean doesn't like to talk about. After getting out of the city--largely by being ruthlessly pragmatic and using the deaths of other people to his advantage to get away from the walkers--he went up to Evanston to try and find his family, only to find his childhood home sacked and burned, and no sign of his parents. He wandered for awhile after that, until he met up with Marco and then eventually Reiner and Bertolt, and found the compound.

role within the compound. Unfortunately, everything Jean is good at doesn't have much of a place in the zombie apocalypse, save two things: thanks to fencing and polo lessons as a kid, he can use a sword and knows how to handle horses. Somehow, this has led to him being the unofficial vet, whenever a wounded animal they decide not to eat wanders in, and he sometimes gives swordplay lessons to anyone interested. Giving up the world that was is harder for Jean that he likes to admit, and he clings to certain things that remind him of what he used to be. He wears dress shirts whenever he can find them, and refuses to take off the broken watch that his mom gave him for his college graduation.

survival pros. Jean knows cities. He grew up roaming all over Chicago, and is surprisingly adept at navigating urban environments and figuring out how to get through them without getting everyone killed. He also puts his (shameful) minor in art to use by drawing maps. He's arguably one of the most educated in the group and knows all kinds of now completely useless facts that sometimes turn out to have some relevance to the situation at hand. Finally, he got out of Chicago on his own using a golf club and a sixteenth century rapier he liberated from the Art Institute Chicago, so he's not bad at crowd control when a horde of walkers descends.

survival cons. He misses the way things used to be a lot, and all his bluster and aggression hides a scared little kid who really just wants to go home. He had to do some horrible things to get out of the city, and is haunted by nightmares. He sucks with guns and refuses to use them. While he comes into his own in cityscapes, he has no idea how things in the country work, and hates to admit that wide open spaces kind of freak him out. Totally a virgin and in the closet about his bisexuality.

extra. Will probably wear a power tie around his forehead, Rambo-style, until someone smarter points out that a walker could totally grab that. Secretly a Homestuck and relates to Dave Strider on a deep, personal level.
